Across MOBA/ARTS
I’ve been playing in the genre of Moba/ARTS, however you want to look at it, for a good…3 years.. maybe even four. I haven’t decided to keep count but at the same time it doesn’t matter too much. But why is it, that tonight, playing with a friend of mine, whom I met through one of them, did I learn disparity. I started playing the first DOTA while in the Navy, downloading the patch via LAN from a friend of mine. Then about a year later, right after LoL beta, I began playing that game. About Christmas of 2010 I got HoN for 5 dollars off of a trade from my brother since HoN didn’t have a paypal option(I should have taken that as a hint), then about a year later, give or take a month, I got a DotA2 invite and shared that with a few people I met over the years through this same genre. Well that’s my background in the genre, now for the disparity.
Everyone has their preferences as far as difficulty or even enjoyability(Don’t judge my lack of an English degree here) as far as this type of game goes. But it does seem that the common consensus goes Dota>HoN>LoL as far as difficutly and as far as how much fun you have, I’ll leave that alone. But tell me why…I have come across more ‘WTFJUSTHAPPENEDOMGHOWDIDIFUCKINGDIEIWASJUSTATFULLLIFE’ moments in HoN than DotA. In the older game, DotA, I might not recognize immediately what happened but at the end of the day, I have a great idea as to how I died because of the balance going on inside the game. It’s the same thing in LoL except at an even lower difficulty.
Yes I have no problems admitting I suck at the English language and also admitting that LoL is the easiest of the three. Perhaps that’s the reason it’s still thriving, picking up new people as we go. But HoN…I’m not to up to date on how things go there, but I know in LoL there are patches every new champ cycle…which means when they put out a new champion/hero/wtfeverhaveyou they also do balancing. However, I know in HoN there isn’t that. They put out new champions/heroes/wtfidon’tcare every other week or so and then balance after a few months. Now how does that not create bbqwtfhotmode situations? It does….and I have found that out while playing Gemini tonight/last night, whatever the fuck you want to call it, in HoN with a friend of mine I met through the Dota2 Beta.
I never had so many WTF moments than in that game. I didn’t know what the other champs were doing, I didn’t know what I was doing, I didn’t know how to combo what I was doing, I didn’t know anything. Now I know a lot of you fanboys are saying ‘Well noooooob, if you’d play the game you’d know’ Well, I’m here to say that I know how to play the genre. I know how to deal with advanced concepts within the genre. If you want to go above and beyond the originators in the genre’ Dota’ then be my guest and prepared to be left behind.
That’s just my two cents, I’m ready to ignore all kinds of flaming from one game or another, but I’d like to let everyone know that this is simply my opinion and if you disagree, you do, if you agree you also do that. I’m not here to sway an opinion or drive one. I’m only stating my own and explaining how I feel about my opinion.
